This weekend, I'm about to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of my Sweet 16. I know...ouch. I'm feeling a bit nostalgic so I'm going to take you all on a little trip down memory lane.
I distinctly remember my16th birthday. We started out with the typical family celebration; parents, sibling, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. Followed by a late night with my bestie. I was a lucky girl growing up to have a full group of people to celebrate all of those momentous occasions. I'm pretty sure this is where my obsession for parties came from. Since we only live near one family member now, it's important that I surround my kids with tons of friends on their special day. Anyway, that morning I woke up feeling smarter and prettier because you know, I was a mature 16 year old and all. If only I knew then, how much MORE I had to learn. Whatever, it was my birthday, I could believe what I wanted to believe. Fast forward 20 years at 36 years old; I can say with 100% certainty that I am definitely smarter (aside from the occasional mom brain episodes) and more mature (geez..I hope!). Oh and I'm a bit prettier because I don't have a head full of Aqua Net with those crazy 5 inch tall bangs. Come to think of it, that's why I'm smarter, no more aerosol hairspray going straight to my brain.
Here is a hilariously clever birthday card made by my best friend. She specifically states that if I throw it away, she'll kill me. Well here I am 20 years later reading it again and laughing myself to tears. It's literally 10 pages long. I've left the more incriminating pages out. You understand, right?! LOL! It's a story of our fabulous teenage lives. I also, still have the wills we wrote after a really bad sunburn. I'll save that for "The Importance of Wearing Sunscreen" post. Oi!
OMG....would ya take a look at that hair? I know you're jealous. We were commonly referred to as the "Hair Sisters" back then. Where on earth did they come up with THAT name? I just don't see it.
The ever so popular 90210 and Melrose Place. Hello, isn't that where all the girls got their fashion sense from in the 90's. I'm not sure that was always a good thing.
I loved me some Liz Claiborne. I remember $25.00 seemed over the top expensive then...and it was! I used to save all of my hard earned money for this stuff. My parents weren't about to donate to the cause. New West was my 2nd favorite. Oh me oh my...fruity goodness with every spritz. I would love to get my hands on a bottle just to reminisce. Oh what memories certain scents can bring back. Cover Girl was the make up; not necessarily of choice but it's what my mom was willing to purchase for me. To this day the smell of Cover Girl powder nauseates me. But the Cover Girl Shimmering Shell lipstick was pretty darn awesome.
I would say this was a pretty typical look for me back in the day. Cardigan sweater, Guess jeans and canvas shoes. In fact, I had this exact outfit that I wore quite often.
There are really no shows I have to watch these days but I do enjoy Desperate Housewives from time to time.
Trivia question: What two actors played in both Melrose Place AND Desperate Housewives?
Thankfully for me, 40 is the new 30 so that's sort of like saying I have 4 more years in my 20's, right?!
Leave a comment and tell me what your favorites of the late 80's early 90's were?

I'm not kidding....really Brandi and Sherry.. BFF's. |
Then...
What I watched
The ever so popular 90210 and Melrose Place. Hello, isn't that where all the girls got their fashion sense from in the 90's. I'm not sure that was always a good thing.
What I Wore
I loved me some Liz Claiborne. I remember $25.00 seemed over the top expensive then...and it was! I used to save all of my hard earned money for this stuff. My parents weren't about to donate to the cause. New West was my 2nd favorite. Oh me oh my...fruity goodness with every spritz. I would love to get my hands on a bottle just to reminisce. Now...
What I Wear
I wish my perfume choices were still $25.00. Dolce and Gabbana and Juicy Couture are the two perfumes I wear most. I've changed up most of my make-up choices aside from the Maybelline Great Lash. It's safe to say I've been a loyal customer for 20 years. I now use Mac eye shadow, Clinique powder, Bobbie Brown Girlie Satin lipstick, and Bare Minerals blush.
I love Stella and Dot and a ruffle collar.
What I Watch
There are really no shows I have to watch these days but I do enjoy Desperate Housewives from time to time.

What I look like now ....
Twenty years later, I'm happy to say, life has treated me well. I've been blessed beyond my wildest dreams. Yes, I'm getting closer to 40 but I don't plan to start lying about my age. I fully intend to embrace every moment. Who really wants to go back in time anyway or stay there for that matter? Not me! I've never been one to live in the past. Why start now. However, this weekend, I'm going to rat my hair up and party like it's 1999. God help me, I'll be in bed by 9:00pm...you laugh....I'm not kidding. Not entirely true...this was actually when I was still 35....close enough. |
